Sprocket recently had the chance  to do a site visit to a previously installed directory. The Building Directory at the Argus Centre at 300 Latrobe street Melbourne was installed in 2012. Building management contacted us and requested some modifications to the software. When these were complete we stayed around took some photographs of the directory in its foyer.

This location is an excellent example of how the sleek DW Directory integrates into a modern building. Many of the walls at this address are asymmetrical. With its strong lines and solid construction the Sprocket Directory provides a visual anchor within the foyer; as well as providing easy to understand building tenant list.

Recently Sprocket completed an installation at a prestigious address; 101 Collins st Melbourne.Located at the ‘Top End’ of Collins Street this enormous classical building called for a full sized directory system. Julian Marocchini worked closely with the Building Managers to achieve what we believe is a beautifully integrated Directory system. The system is comprised of paired 46″ Directories at both the Collins Street entrance and the Finders Lane entrance. Each installation is driven by a single computer feeding two Samsung flat panel LCD’s. In addition to the directories themselves a second independent system displays visual information about the building.

Our special thanks go out to Brian Corbett of 101 Collins Street.

Sprocket recently assisted our key client Earl Brandspace with the Nikon Australia stand at the recent Melbourne Digital Show, held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. We love photography here at Sprocket, and it was great to see the marriage of an Australian designed product with a company the stature of Nikon. Nikon had prepared a dedicated iPad application for the event to promote the recent release of the Nikon 1 series. Naturally Earl Brandspace needed a smart looking and secure enclosure for their iPads. We were delighted to help. The Nikon stand was the easily the largest and most impressive at the show. It was an impressive event and look forward to working with them again soon.

The Manchester Unity Building is one of Melbourne s most loved and recognised buildings. Built in 1932 it is landmark building; the first to employ modern Project Management techniques in it construction, Australian marble was used extensively on interior walls throughout the building. The two escalators, the first in Melbourne, although only one now survives. The foyer of the building is particularly striking. Unfortunately the directory boards were also from the last century.

Sprocket was approached to replace the existing paper directory boards with a new touch screen digital system. The challenge was to incorporate the new technology without compromising the period charm of the building foyer. We think we succeed.

We would like thank Michael from Frank Knight, Mat Tae and Dr Kia Pajouhesh and the Committee of Management of the MUB Owners Corporation for their input and assistance.

Three identical IPOS stands with iPad enclosures in portrait orientation on pivoting heads enabled visitors to explore and interact with AAPT’s network coverage Australia wide.Sprocket’s iPOS Launchpad system provided the ideal framework for dynamic corporate branding and message delivery which was enhanced by the addition of the optional A4 brochure dispensers. The result was a highly successful product launch by AAPT and indeed they topped the show by winning the CEbit Business Award for Service Distinction.

Windows 8 for Tablets

Posted by | Posted in Software, Sprocket News | Posted on 09-03-2012

We are all waiting for Windows to release their real OS for the Tablet. We love the ipad, its slick powerful and all that most people need. Through LaunchPad we’ve been able to transform the ipad into a powerful commercial tool. However, the world runs on windows, and there are so many advantages working with the worlds most popular Operation system; 3rd part device integration to name but one.

The rumours from Redmond about windows 8 are very positive.

It seems that Windows 8 for the tablet is going to be a lot like Windows 7 for the Phone — and that’s probably a good thing. There are full screen “Metro” style apps and live tiles that animate with pictures, social network notifications, messages, emails and weather. Everything seems smooth and responsive to the touch.

The touch UI looks like it has been redesigned and seems to be both ergonomic, efficient, and clutter-free. The main controls are right next to the side easily accessible by your thumbs. Just swipe along the left side to flip between open apps. Swipe across it and then back to show thumbnails for open apps that you can easily tap to open the one you’re looking for. Then swiping on the right side with your thumb opens the “charms” for other types of operating-system interactions.

Also it looks like Microsoft might have managed to integrate the touch environment without sacrificing the more traditional and detailed PC desktop environment. Users can switch between touch and stylus interaction easily. This is a boon for those wanting to to some real work on the tablet; not to mention access to all the components that make Windows such a suitable platform for kiosks. We cant wait for its release.

City of Melbourne Christmas Nativity Book

Posted by | Posted in Industrial Design, Our Kiosks, Software, Sprocket News, Uncategorized | Posted on 18-01-2012

Based on design concepts by Hive Creative, Sprocket engineered a customised enclosure for the City of Melbourne Christmas display in the the city square. The aluminium and steel housing was in the form of a giant story book and featured dual hi brightness46″ LCD screens displaying an animationof the story of the nativity in picturebook form. The presentation played day and night leading up to Xmas and was an instant hit with children and adults alike.
Hive Creative also did a wonderful job on the animation and a special thanks also goes to Atco Pickering as the manufacturers who worked tirelessly on the project [check out the video].
The entire project was great success and Sprocket are looking forward to expanding the concept further for the following year.
